...a line used to make reference to one of the greatest to hold a mic. Not me - him! I in turn use the keyboard as if they were the vocals of a lion.I prefer to shout in terms of positioning oneself to win in this paper chase. The professional paper chase.
I use the line to grab attention because apparently my others posts have been a bit...well...I don't know. May be you can read them and tell me what you think.
Before you do, let me leave a quick piece on how to make certain your next encounter at a job fair is promising. I know, most of you despise job fairs, but they are an opportunity to meet the decision makers, so participation is a part of the formula for millions of candidates across the county.
The first thing you MUST do at any job fair is stand out. Sounds simple but so few do. You can stand out and impress employers at a job fair, possibly get hired, definitely increase your chances of a second interview, if you do just a few
things differently.
1. Research
Instead of showing up "just because," take a moment to go online and do a bit of research on the participating companies. Mark those of great interest with a symbol that says "these are my favorites." Do the same with those that come in second. Then spend the needed time required to brush up on these companies so that you have an intelligent conversation at the job fair. Oh - you want to know what to look for and where? 2. Skip the trinkets - take the paper or pda device!
Once you've found information that proves your interest in an employer, jot down notes on 3×5 cards (or in your
PDA) and have them handy during the career fair. Employers don't mind notes - it's a signal of organization. Let those notes serve as talking points. On your way out - don't take the trinkets. Who needs them anyway.
3. Do take their business card.
I know -- shaking hands and thanking them is important. But so is the business card. How else will you follow up.
How does this make me stand out? Glad you asked. Next time you attend a job fair, stop and look around for a moment. Look at how many people are empty handed, look unprepared, are wandering aimlessly, are holding more trinkets than invitations to come on site. Look around. Just remember, someone is looking at you!
